Warning : Samsung Galaxy S7 Active may fail on Water Test!

You might want to wait before you take that Galaxy S7 Active for a swim. Samsung's phone, touted for its durability, didn't survive water-resistance tests conducted by Consumer Reports.

Samsung says the S7 Active has an IP68 rating for water resistance, meaning it can survive a dunk in up to five feet of water for up to 30 minutes without suffering any damage. That's not what Consumer Reports found in its testing, though. The company says the Galaxy S7 failed its water-resistance test, becoming inoperable after a half-hour in the drink.

Specifically, Consumer Reports placed an S7 Active in a water tank pressurized to 2.12-pounds per square-inch, which it says is the equivalent of a little less than 5 feet of water. Removing the phone after 30 minutes, Consumer Reports found the S7 Active's screen was "obscured by green lines, and tiny bubbles were visible in the lenses of the front- and rear-facing cameras."

It's not a one-off issue, either. A second phone tested by Consumer Reports also failed the water resistance test.

We reviewed the Galaxy S7 Active, and didn't run into any problems, with the phone performing impressively in the durability tests we ran. Our water torture test involved leaving the phone in a foot-tall fish tank for 30 minutes: the S7 Active survived that dip. Still, in light of Consumer Reports' results, we plan to retest the Galaxy S7 Active by putting it in a deeper water tank. We'll update our review with the results.

When we asked Samsung for comment on the Consumer Reports testing,  a spokesman told us, "The Galaxy S7 Active has received high scores in many reviews. It is IP68 certified for water resistance and has gone through strict quality assurance testing to ensure that it meets and exceeds industry standards. We are currently speaking with Consumer Reports to understand their experience and will closely explore their feedback.” Consumer Reports says the phone maker said it's received few complaints from its customers about S7 Actives failing to work after water exposure and suggested that the affected models may have been defective, shipping without being fully watertight. Affected phones are covered by a warranty, according to Samsung, which told also Consumer Reports that it's investigating the issue.

Have you experienced any problems with your Galaxy S7 Active and water? Let us know as we follow up with retests of our own.
